Special Education Teacher's Aide
Elementary School - Full-Time, 10-Month Position
Position Summary
The Special Education Teacher's Aide works under the direction of the classroom teacher and special education staff to support the academic, behavioral, and social-emotional needs of students with disabilities in an elementary school setting. The aide assists in implementing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), provides one-on-one and small-group support, and helps maintain a safe, structured, and inclusive learning environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist the classroom teacher in implementing instructional programs and IEP goals for individual students
- Provide one-on-one and small-group support to students with disabilities in academic, behavioral, and social skills
- Reinforce lessons and concepts introduced by the teacher, using strategies suited to each student's needs
- Support students with personal care, mobility, and daily living needs as required
- Monitor and document student behavior, progress, and participation; communicate observations to the teacher
- Implement behavior management plans and de-escalation strategies as directed
- Assist with transitions between activities, classrooms, and school areas, including lunch, recess, and specials
- Support communication systems (e.g., picture schedules, AAC devices) for students with communication needs
- Help prepare instructional materials and maintain an organized, accessible classroom environment Accompany students on field trips and during school events1as needed
- Maintain confidentiality of student records and information in accordance with FERPA and district policy
- Collaborate with teachers, related service providers, and families as part of the student support team
- Perform other duties as assigned by the classroom teacher, special education staff, or building administration
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate's degree or higher preferred
- New York State Teaching Assistant certification required, or eligibility to obtain within the required timeframe
- Experience working with children with disabilities preferred
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and maintain accurate records
- Patience, reliability, and a genuine commitment to supporting all learners
- Ability to physically assist students, including lifting, bending, and responding quickly when needed
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Working Conditions
- Standard elementary school day, following the district calendar
- Primarily classroom-based, with time in shared spaces such as the cafeteria, gymnasium, and playground
- May require physical activity, including standing, walking, and assisting students throughout the day

Classroom Teacher and Building Principal, in coordination with the Director of Special Education
