Long-Term Substitute Teacher — English as a New Language (ENL)
Full-Time, Temporary Assignment
Position Summary
The Long-Term Substitute ENL Teacher provides English as a New Language instruction to Multilingual Learners (MLLs) for an extended period, assuming full responsibility for an existing ENL caseload in the absence of the regular classroom teacher. This position delivers standards-aligned language instruction, supports students' access to grade-level content, and ensures continuity of services in accordance with New York State Commissioner's Regulations Part 154 and NYSED requirements for English Language Learners.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide direct ENL instruction to assigned students in accordance with their Individualized Education Program for English Language Learners (as applicable) and required Part 154 unit allocations.
- Plan and deliver standards-based lessons that build English language proficiency across listening, speaking, reading, and writing domains.
- Collaborate with classroom teachers to support Multilingual Learners' access to grade-level content and the Next Generation Learning Standards.
- Monitor and document student progress toward English language proficiency benchmarks, including preparation for NYSESLAT administration.
- Maintain accurate and timely records, including attendance, progress notes, and required NYSED compliance documentation.
- Communicate regularly with families regarding student progress, in coordination with district translation and interpretation resources as needed.
- Participate in grade-level, department, and Committee on Special Education meetings as appropriate to support MLL students.
- Maintain continuity of instruction and classroom routines established by the regular classroom teacher.
Qualifications
- Valid New York State certification in English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) or English as a New Language (ENL).
- Prior experience teaching Multilingual Learners preferred.
- Knowledge of Commissioner's Regulations Part 154 requirements for ELL/MLL programming preferred.
- Strong instructional planning, classroom management, and communication skills.
- Ability to begin the assignment promptly and commit to the full duration of the long-term placement.
Assignment Details
This is a full-time, long-term substitute assignment covering an anticipated leave of absence. Start and end dates will be confirmed with the building principal and will follow the district's regular student calendar and schedule.

Terms of Employment
This is a temporary, long-term substitute position compensated on the district's per diem or long-term substitute pay scale, as outlined in the applicable collective bargaining agreement or board policy.
