12 Month Position
Location: HSHS/HJHS and Buildings & Grounds
Days/Hours: Monday - Friday/8 Hours per Day - 6:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.
Rate of Pay: Contractual rate

Minimum Qualifications: Candidate must currently hold a Custodian position, within the district, have held or
currently hold the permanent competitive Civil Service title of Custodian (elsewhere) or must be qualified and reachable through a Columbia County Civil Service Custodian eligible list (Job description is attached).

HEAD CUSTODIAN
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves the responsibility for performing and supervising building cleaning and maintenance of an average-sized government building on an assigned shift. Work is performed under general supervision with leeway for the use of independent judgment in keeping buildings and equipment up to approved standards of cleanliness and operation. Immediate supervision may be exercised over the work of a small number of cleaning or custodian personnel. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)

Supervises and participates in all building cleaning activities;

Assigns tasks to subordinates, gives instructions in the use of building cleaning supplies, materials and equipment and checks to see that the assignments have been accomplished;

May perform a variety of semi-skilled carpentry, plumbing, electrical and other building maintenance tasks;

Operates or checks the operation of oil, gas or coal-fired heating systems;

May supervise and participate in a variety of grounds keeping activities;

Inspects all work performed by private contractors;

Checks to ensure that buildings are heated, cleaned, locked and in readiness for all activities

Consults with superior regarding unusual maintenance problems and makes the recommendations concerning the purchase of supplies, materials and equipment;

Cleans or supervises the cleaning of boilers;

Requisitions and maintains an inventory of supplies as required;

Keeps simple activity records and reports.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES & PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Thorough knowledge of building cleaning practices, supplies and equipment and the ability to use them efficiently and economically; good knowledge of the operation and maintenance of school building heating equipment; ability to make minor plumbing, electrical, carpentry and mechanical repairs and to perform a variety of routine maintenance tasks; ability to understand and to carry out oral and written directions; ability to lead and supervise the work of others; willingness to perform custodial and other manual tasks; thoroughness; dependability; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and two (2) years experience in building cleaning and minor maintenance repairs.
