SUPERVISOR OF TRANSPORTATION
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is a supervisory position involving responsibility for the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of the transportation system of a school district. Because the work involves the transporting of children, the safety factor is of utmost importance. Consequently, the incumbent must be aware at all times of the need to observe special cautionary measures by those involved in the transportation program and related repair and maintenance activities. This class differs from Head Bus Driver, Head Automotive Mechanic or other equivalent titles because of the overall direction of the transportation program including the supervision of maintenance and repair staff as well as Bus Drivers. The work is performed under the direct supervision of the Superintendent of Schools allowing some leeway for the exercise of independent judgment. Supervision is exercised over the work of all subordinate transportation personnel. The incumbent does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)

Prepares time schedules for buses;

Determines routes to be followed by bus drivers;

Supervises loading and determines stopping places for buses;

Prepares all state transportation reports and maps of bus routes;

Keeps a daily record of mileage, number of pupils carried and number of stops made on each route;

Provides the Board of Education with a monthly transportation report including operation costs, (gasoline, oil, anti-freeze, parts, materials, labor, wages, storage, rental and other expenses);

Approves all transportation purchases and bills;

Determines disciplinary rules to be maintained and seating arrangements on buses;

Supervises the repair work on buses and approves work orders for school mechanics and outside garages;

Arranges for all special bus trips including those for athletic teams;

Maintains time records of bus drivers for payroll purposes.
FULL PERFORMANCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Good knowledge of standard transportation methods of the operation of buses; Good knowledge of the New York State Motor Vehicle Law, and applicable regulations of the Public Service Commission; Good knowledge of safe driving practices; Good knowledge of general repairs for school transportation equipment; Good knowledge of the geography of the district; Ability to schedule and supervise the work of subordinates; Ability to keep records and make reports; Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Six (6) years of work experience vehicle dispatching, and/or driving vehicles, route scheduling or fleet maintenance for a private or public enterprise such as a trucking company, municipal transportation system, school bus system or similar activity.
